What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal-transfer prescription label stock?
Direct thermal labels use a heat-sensitive coating that darkens when the printhead passes over it — no ink ribbon is needed. They are the most cost-effective option for standard retail pharmacy use where labels are applied and dispensed quickly. The trade-off is that prolonged exposure to heat, UV light, or certain solvents can fade the print over time.
Thermal-transfer labels require a wax, wax-resin, or full-resin ribbon to transfer ink onto the face stock. The resulting print is significantly more durable and is the correct choice for compounding pharmacies, veterinary dispensing, or any situation where labels must withstand refrigeration cycles, moisture, alcohol wipes, or extended shelf life. All Brigade standard prescription labels use a permanent, high-tack acrylic adhesive that is formulated to bond securely to the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene surfaces common in prescription vials and packer bottles — including amber, blue, clear, and white containers. The adhesive maintains its bond after refrigeration and in moderately humid dispensary environments. Labels do not peel, curl at the edges, or slide under normal handling from pharmacy counter to patient.
